How to best showcase something transparent
K18 was tasked with showcasing the intricate design of “Lightbody 03” - a delicate lamp hand-cast entirely from fully transparent glass - in under 30 seconds. Additional variants in frosted and tinted glass added complexity to the process. To capture the beauty of the piece, K18 internally prototyped various approaches.
Starting with traditional staged setups, we quickly realized that these methods felt almost anachronistic given the modern, ethereal nature of the lamp. Instead, we shifted focus to what was off-screen, rather than the object itself.
First traditional setups with staged lighting seemed almost anachronistic
and tests in a more modern setup did not yield the desired results, either, as the backdrop always seemed to overpower the object.
We determined that the best way to highlight the lamp’s design was through its interaction with its surroundings. The ad focuses entirely on the ever-changing reflections and refractions, which reveal different aspects of the piece—subtly overlaid by the glass body itself.
